This special recording was made to celebrate the opening of the Ex Paramount/Odeon , Manchester's Publix 1 Wurlitzer, one of only 15 built by the Wurlitzer company for the Paramount Publix Theatre chain in America and the only Publix 1 instrument to be exported outside the US. More history of the organ is available in The Organs in the Recordings.
The Wurlitzer was given to the Lancastrian Theatre Organ Trust , who in turn installed the organ in the Free Trade Hall , Manchester in 1973/1977. Due to the closure of the Tree Trade Hall, the organ was removed and restored by the aid of funding from the Foundation for the Arts and Sports in Liverpool and the National Lottery. The organ has been fully restored, including the replacement of the old relays with a modern computer control system. In 1947, the Wurlitzer was overhauled and several changes were made to the specification, noticeably the removal of one of the Vox Humanas for the inclusion of an English Horn rank made by Rogers of Leeds. Many organists had commented that while the inclusion of the English Horn was worthy, the sound of the rank was more trumpet-like. It was because of this, that during the restoration, it was decided that a new English Horn should be built to the same pattern as the one in the trust's other Wurlitzer, at the time in the Granada Studios in Manchester and now in storage. And what an inclusion!
Several other slight changes to the console specification have been made, in the form of additions to the various departments, in order to give a more standard pattern of unification that was found in the later Wurlitzer models.
With the aid of substantial funding, the Lancastrian Theatre Organ Trust feels that it has achieved the Trust's motto, which is "to preserve the tradition and craftsmanship of yesterday for the generations of tomorrow".
