A beautifully produced A5 publication, with 128pp, 4 colour plates and numerous illustrations. It can be claimed that the 'Mighty Wurlitzer' cinema organ, which magically arose from the depths amid coloured lights in the cinemas of the 1930s and 40s, was 'born' or at least 'conceived' on the Wirral peninsula in Cheshire, England. This book shows how this came about, and also puts on permanent record the history of a little organ, almost 120 years old, and now in the care of the Lancastrian Theatre Organ Trust. This organ has an interesting and unique history which is just part of the development of the 'Wurlitzer', beginning in Wirral. The book will be of interest to both the local historian and the organ enthusiast, as it concerns Victorian Birkenhead as well as details on organ history. |
